Commercial Wastewater Treatment Technologies

There are a variety of treatment processes available, and the choice of process depends on the nature of the commercial premises such as the characteristics of the wastewater and the frequency and volume of loadings.

SBR [Sequential Batch Reactor]

The Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is an activated sludge process designed to operate under non-steady state conditions. An SBR operates in a true batch mode with aeration and sludge settlement both occurring in the same chamber. The major differences between SBR and conventional continuous-flow activated sludge system is that the SBR tank carries out the functions of equalisation, aeration and settlement in a time sequence rather than in the conventional sequence of continuous-flow systems. In addition, the SBR system design has the ability to treat a wide range of commercial wastewater volumes, whereas the continuous system is based upon a fixed flow rate.

If there is no sewage entering the treatment plant the SBR process will detect this and enter ‘eco mode’. So for periods of non-use, the system does not keep constantly aerating and treating the sewage. The controlled nature of the SBR makes it ideal for a commercial application with variable flows and where there are periods of non-use. Typical examples where an SBR is the best choice include the following: schools wastewater treatment, creche wastewater treatment, caravan park wastewater treatment. Advantages of the SBR process are as follows;

  • High degree of operational flexibility
  • No separate clarifiers
  • Low capital cost
  • Low power consumption
  • Very high effluent quality due to the controlled process

MBBR [Moving Bed Biological Reactor]

The MBBR is a recently developed form of sewage treatment. MBBR processes improve reliability, offer simple operation, and require less volume than traditional commercial wastewater treatment systems. MBBR technology employs thousands of balls of plastic media operating in mixed motion within an aeration chamber. Each individual biocarrier increases productivity by providing a very high surface area for the growth of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria. It is this high-density population of bacteria that achieves high-rate biodegradation within the system, while also offering process reliability and ease of operation. This technology provides cost-effective treatment with minimal maintenance since MBBR processes self-maintain an optimum level of productive biofilm. Additionally, the biofilm attached to the mobile biocarriers within the system automatically responds to load fluctuations. The MBBR has the following main benefits;

  • Compact design
  • Simple to expand by just adding more media to a tank
  • Single pass process with no need for transfer pumps or siphons
  • Low maintenance
  • Can deal with highly variable loads

Additional Treatment Technologies

If effluent quality is a concern, we can design a concrete commercial system to achieve any effluent quality through the use of additional technologies such as;

  • UV disinfection
  • Chemical dosing for P reduction
  • Denitrification
  • GSM dial out alarms
  • Extra large sludge storage chambers

  1. Diarmuid Savage

    5 stars, no issues whatsoever.

  2. Mark Regan

    Saved a lot of money going with Biocell. Nice work.

  3. paddy myles

    Biocell is a great company to do business with. I know a little bit about the industry myself and after shopping around I chose them for the job.

  4. The Horse and Jockey Pub

    Had a disc type unit installed. Caused nothing but trouble when we had busy weekends. Replaced in 3 months ago with a Biocell unit and I wish I had not done it sooner. Great company. 5+++

  5. Tony French

    I have saved a FORTUNE on groundworks and concreting that would need to go around a plastic tank as I needed a very large 300 person system.

  6. KD Developments

    Far superior to the GRP unit I installed for my last commercial project.

  7. J Harty

    A biocell system was specified by the engineer on a heritage railway visitor center. I usually deal with a different supplier – but I got such a good service and value for money I will use biocell water again.

  8. Tony Kirwan

    Have a small pub in the west country. Space is limited so I needed to install in the car park. A concrete tank was a logical choice rather than buying a plastic one and surrounding it with concrete!

  9. JP – Project Manager

    I am the PM on a job. I have limited experience with onsite wastewater treatment. Called a few suppliers but it was pretty clear immediately who knew what they were doing and who was not trying to take advantage of my lack of experience. Will be back to Biocell for my next off mains solution.

  10. Aidan K

    I’m an installer. This is not my first biocell installed and it won’t be my last either!

  11. The publican –

    My old victorian cesspit needed to be put into retirement. Bought a grease trap and sewage treatment plant from the guys at Biocell. Very professional. Their local installer did a turnkey job. USed a concrete system as its under the carpark. They even came back 3 weeks later to make sure all was working fine. For peace of mind I took out a maintenance contract too. Overall I was pleased with the job and it was done on time and on budget.

  12. T. A. Bront

    Very difficult site. Needed to install tank 9ft below the ground level. The concrete system made this very easy so made a big overall saving.

  13. Septic Systems Ireland

    We do alot of work with Biocell. Just finished a project where we put in a 150 pop unit as part of our drainage contract for a housing development. Biocell got approval to switch to their system from the Council and provided all paperwork and documentation. A great job and everyone was happy.

  14. Principal

    The system was installed by the Department of Education – who chose Biocell. But we have had a great experience dealing with the guys @ biocell from an operational viewpoint

  15. QS Services

    I am a QS – I always go to Biocell for larger projects to save my clients money. Always a great service at the right proce

  16. Corbett Court

    I have two Biocell commercial systems installed. One at a hotel and another at a busy restaurant. I cannot recommend them enough.
